Haitian Diaspora in Chicago celebrating 210th anniversary

Through his address to his audience, Condé also took the time to remind all that, while January 1st is easily recognized and celebrated as the start of the new year, Haitians at home and in the wider Diaspora were not to forget that it, and the following day, January 2nd, serve as prominent Haitian holidays in their own right, The 210th anniversary of the Haitian National Independence and Ancestors' Day respectively.

For the occasion, the Diaspora members were invited by the Haitian Catholic Mission of the Archdiocese to attend their mass held at the Church of Our Lady of Peace and celebrated on Christmas Day at 5:30 pm. After the mass the basement of the church served as the setting for a reception.

Condé also took the opportunity of his address to invite members to a community meeting to be held on January 18 at the Levy Center. The event is slated to feature entertainment by poets and musicians, but will also feature different speakers and a look into Haiti's past. The attendees will be treated to traditional Haitian Giraumon soup and will join in the commemorative event also held in honor of the victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake.
