What is Ti Manman Chery and Ede Pep?

Ti Manman Cheri is a social welfare program that was launched on 27th May 2012 by the President of the Republic of Haiti. It is the first of its kind welfare program under which, the government will provide facilities to extremely poor families with children. The program will facilitate schooling and improve living conditions and the first beneficiaries targeted were Carrefour Feuilles, Cité Soleil, Fort National and Bel-Air. The government planned to use $13 million from PetroCaribe to fund this program.

According to Ti Manman Cheri, government proposed to send money through Tchocho mobile phone service of Digicel to every mother given the condition that their children enrolled and went to school regularly. 400, 600 or 800 gourdes would be given every month to mothers with 1, 2 or 3 child respectively. Initial registration was decided to be for 6 months with 10 allowed renewals totaling up to 5 years. The program aimed at reaching 100,000 beneficiary families.

President Michel Martelly in Cotes-de-Fer

Not unlike other members of the government, Haitian President Michel Martelly has been busy conducting tours, his latest seeing him visit Côtes-de-Fer where inaugurations abounded. The first inauguration was at a Canadian Government sponsored police station where the Director General of the National Police of Haiti (PNH), Godson Orelus, other Government and Parliament members, and Henri Paul Normandin, Canadian Ambassador to Haiti were in attendance. Another inauguration involved the recently built bridge over the Côtes-de-Fer River. This new construction will act as the entrance to the city at the Boulevard named after the Haitian President's father, Gérard Martelly.

Western Union to enable Haitians to access government payments

The Haitian government has announced that, through the Western Union, the issuing of badly needed government payments, used to meet the needs of the poor through programs for schools and universities, the handicapped and over 200,000 people, will finally be more readily accessible to those in the dreaded 'last mile'.

At first, the service will make funds available to the needy through their more than 600 locations across the country. They also will give technical assistance to assist with payment delivery and plan to offer other options for distributing funds through bank accounts, prepaid cards and mobiles.
