It is, perhaps, an artists' mandate to create emotive, moving pieces from the most unlikely materials. Some make it their point of duty to turn every-day, nondescript objects into riveting pieces. Romel Jean Pierre is one Haitian artist that would take this a step further.

Educated in art by the colorful streets of his home-town Port-au-Prince, Haitian artist Romel Jean Pierre is only 19 years old, but uses his gift to turn things as mundane as old car parts and broken down furniture into sculptures fashioned into abstract pieces of art which speak to the materialistic nature of society today.

Haiti's great writers seem to have an added edge that their contemporaries from other countries, on the same mass scale, simply don't. Born in November of 1942, Large grew up under the stifling Duvalier rule and found himself personally affected by the 'absurd order' given for students to stay home on an unlimited vacation, as answer to the student strike. His answer was to take to the streets, a specific ban having been imposed, and he was jailed for his temerity.

Galerie Marassa, established in 1977, is a leading galleria of the Caribbean. It is located in Petion-Ville, Haiti and has acquired global recognition since its birth. Galerie Marassa has created a home for nurturing new Haitian art talents.

Mr. and Mrs Roger Monnin are the people behind Galeria Monin. The history goes back to 1947 when the couple found settlement in Haiti. Both were previously based in Jura, Switzerland.

Galerie Monin was dedicated in 1956 at 382 Boulevard Jean Jacques Dessalines in Port-au-Prince.

The Gallery got a significant boost in 1968 when the founders Mr. and Mrs Roger Monnin were joined by their two children; Michel and Lena.

In his efforts and his desire to branch out from the sacred or vodou art Michel worked with the new generation artists to produce painters of the Galeria Monnin School.

It was during the World War II when DeWitt Clinton Peters arrived in Haiti as a high school English teacher. He chose teaching to substitute service in the military.
