Accepting the award from President Martelly was Apostolic Nuncio, Mgr. Bernardito Cleopas Auza who, at 55, is the 18th Haitian Nuncio following his appointment in 2008 as the successor to Mgr. Mario Giordana. His tribute comes at the end of his 6 year tenure, and President Martelly highlighted Mgr. Auza's year of diplomatic service. Mgr. Auza spoke himself on his time in Haiti, which he has grown to love. He reminisced about the 2010 earthquake, and spoke about the resilience and courage of the people of Haiti.
Haiti and the Vatican, in March of 1862, formed the diplomatic ties that exist today. Many years following, the first Haitian Nunciature was established and Mgr. George Joseph Cuarana was appointed. Before departing, Mgr. Auza confirmed that the infrastructure changes to be undertaken on the Catholic Church would be completed within the next six months.
