After the introductions, President Martelly and Pope Francis exchanged symbolic tributes. Martelly presented Francis a bronze dove of peace, and he in turn gave Martelly the Angel of Peace medal. He also gave him the Aparecida. As a courtesy gift for the First Lady he gave her the Gaudiam Evangelii.
Once past the formalities, the Pontiff received Martelly in a private conversation. They spoke for twenty minutes in Spanish, which both speak fluently. The Vatican issued a statement that said the talk ranged from the good the Holy See could do for Haiti, most notably social aid in education and health areas, to reconstruction efforts of rebuilding Haiti, to sincere conversations between government entities to resolve differences for the benefit of the Haitian people.
Martelly and his delegation continued their tour to Brussels to meet with King Philip; the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy; and the President of Wallonia, Rudy Demotte.
