Morne des Commissaires in Thiotte, Massif de la Selle

Many rural area towns across Haiti suffer from the same problem of limited water supply. For the Massif de la Selle town of Thiotte, perched at an elevation of between 1,200 and 1,800 meters above the sea, their water problem could have been described as nightmarish, a situation that can so easily lead to the spread of diseases such as the current Haitian epidemic of cholera. Some help has been given to the town of Thiotte, found to the south of Forêt des Pins, where once the residents would have to travel far distances by foot just to get water.

Four Seasons Hotels to start Serving Haitian Coffee

Four non-government organizations (NGOs) have partnered to aid coffee producers in Haiti, growing coffee beans for the export market. The Clinton and Leslois Shaw Foundations, along with La Columbe Torrefaction and Four Seasons Hotels, have revealed Four Seasons will start offering Haitian coffee on its menus. The variety chosen for inclusion on the menus is a coffee bean indigenous to mountainous areas enfolding Thiotte. La Columbe is the coffee bean wholesaler.

Part of a long-term partnership to outsource Haitian coffee to wider markets, the NGOs intend to create more employment opportunities and raise the standard of living for many Haitians as the enterprise develops new markets.

Haiti first H1N1 death in Thiotte, Nan Bannann, southern city of Belle-Anse

On Monday, June 17, 2013, Haiti reported its first suspected death caused by the H1N1 virus or the A flu. It is reported that the person who fell victim of the N1H1 was a resident of Nan Bannann's community that lives in Belle-Anse's southern city that is located at a distance of 110 kilometers southwest from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. It was confirmed by a government official that the victim died in Thiotte's Sacred Heart Hospital that is located 65 kilometers to the east of Port-au-Prince.

According to reports, the person who is suspected to have died because of the N1H1 actually contracted this virus in the city of Anse-a-Pitres which shares a border with Dominican Republic, the country where 8 people have been confirmed dead because of the N1H1 virus.

Thiotte offers best Haitian Coffee

Residents in the town of Thiotte in the Arrondissement of Belle-Ense heavily rely on the town's booming coffee industry. Many residents here are coffee farmers who get support from an organization called Root Capital. Under its small-business model program COOPCAB, rural farmers work together in order to increase and ensure the quality production of coffee beans. Coffee farmers in Thiotte grow Arabica beans.

Rural farmers also receive around 100,000 coffee and tree seedings from COOPCAB and this supply allows them to maintain production. Not only that, COOPCAB also encourages Thiotte farmers to follow sustainable farming practices so that the production of coffee in the town remains strong and steady.
