It has been a slow but eventual road to recovery for the sisters and students of the Institution du Sacré-Coeur de Turgeau. Ever since the January 2010 earthquake, which, in less than a minute, took down the old Sacred Heart in its entirety save for the gymnasium, the rebuilding process has been in progress. Now, the school can celebrate its brand new infrastructure, including the secondary school completed last year--with plans for three other modules to follow--, but there were many steps along the way to the restoration of the Institute of the Sacred-Heart.

Located at Port-au-Prince in Haiti, the Collège Canado-Haitien is a school that was established in 1969 in Turgeau. The school was founded by Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Canado-Haitien later integrated students attending high school in other schools founded by Brothers of the Sacred Heart like Saint-Jean L'Evangeliste, Pope John XVIII School and Liberia School. The Canado-Haitien also served students of other schools like Saint-Louis de Gonzague School, The Petit Séminaire Collège Saint Martial and others.

Collège Canado-Haitien had a four-floor campus before the 2010 earthquake and consisted of 31 classrooms, the secretariat, a cafeteria, a library, an auditorium, the Direction (place for bureau of counselors, asst. principals and principals), two volleyball and two basketball courts. Right next to the Collège Canado-Haitien was the center of Canado-technical center. The building of Canado-technical center was also hit by the earthquake and was damaged severely. It is now being repaired. The Collège Canado-Haitien was hit badly and of 31 classrooms, only 3 are intact. The Direction, the secretariat and the cafeteria were not harmed by the earthquake.

Tourism has been on a substantial descent over the last 20 years. But one series of events, the Fête champêtre, continues to give hope to a struggling industry as tourists, local, from the Diaspora, and international, flock Haiti to witness the countryside festival.

One of the main avenues for entertainment to the 18th century elite, a Fête champêtre (a country feast or pastoral festival) was a type of garden party much loved at court. With pretensions to simplicity, the Fête champêtre was patronized by the well dressed, entertained by musicians hidden in the trees, as they enjoyed the beauty of landscaped park.

The bell ringing that "Haiti is open for Business" sounded very loud this week as Marriott International announced that it will open its first hotel in the area of Turgeau in Port-au-Prince Haiti. The 173-room, $45 million Marriott Hotel is expected to be open in 2014.

With some convincing work coming on the part of Former US President Bill Clinton and DIGICEL Team, Marriott International has decided to be among the first in the revival of Haiti after the 2010 earthquake in the area of tourism.

The new Marriott in Port-au-Prince will be able to provide needed jobs to the population and lodging for the tourist industry which is expected to take off within the next few years in Haiti. The Hotel is to be equipped with restaurants and meeting space for non-government organizations, relief agencies and other groups.
