Solar-Powered Microgrid in the Town of Les Anglais

On Monday, June 1, 2015, the officials of the non-profit organization 'Earth Spark International' inaugurated the first micro network distribution of renewable microgrid energy system which will provide electricity to 430 households and businesses in the town of Les Anglais (South Department). This network has been named as "Eko Pwop (Elektrisite Kominotè Pwop)". To generate the pollution free power supply, Earth Spark International has installed an automated hybrid system, including about 90 kilowatts of solar panels, 400 kWh of battery capacity, and an emergency generator. The company has also installed a grid throughout the city, including a medium-voltage line to meet the future increased demand.

As per the statement of Rachel McManus, one of the officials of the Earth Spark International, this solar hybrid grid power supply system, as a main source of electricity, is the first of its kind in Haiti which would serve as a model to be replicated in other communes in Haiti. To ensure the sustainability of the grid, initially a prepayment system has been introduced where the customers can know about their status of use and recharge their accounts accordingly with prepaid cards available with the local energy seller "plop plop" with the same ease and flexibility of recharging a mobile phone. Each house on the network will be equipped with a standard electrical installation, as well as a new generation of smart meter developed by startup SparkMeter. Earth Spark has developed this model program entitled " Energie Sud" with funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) under the program of "USAID Powering Agriculture: An Energy Grand Challenge for Development". The feasibility of the project was conducted with financial support from the Government of Norway through the UN and Coalition partners "Côte Sud Initiative (CSI).
