Spanning several hectares of acreage, The Blu Shangri La Hotel Resort promises to be one of the largest hotel accommodations on the island. It will contain 105 rooms and suites, a convention complex, theater space, and casinos. The site, Gelée, is a short stroll from the renovated Antoine Simon International Airport. The construction project, slated to break ground in late spring 2013, has yet to undergo environmental reviews, which must happen before the project can be considered shovel-ready.

Minister of Tourism, Stephanie Villedrouin, a proactive advocate for increased tourism to Haiti, wants to coordinate with the public relations staff of the new hotel to develop a grand-opening promotional package to be included in the press kit that will be sent to the online and offline news and entertainment media. The idea is to promote Les Cayes's Blu Shangri La Hotel Resort as a travel destination in the South Department.

One of the primary factors in attracting increased tourism to the South Department, Minister Villedrouin explained, is completion of Antoine Simon's new terminal and airstrip. The completed renovation will open up the region of the South Department to increased tourist trade, as well as the imminent airport project in South Department's Ile à Vache.
