A Haiti Biosphere Reserve Recognized at The UNESCO Meeting

The area was recognized due to the presence of vast mountains and plains coupled with dry tropical forest and a coastal environment. The biosphere is shared by both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a stretch in the region of the Caribbean forming a kind of a corridor which is shared among the countries in the Caribbean.

The meeting was held at the UNESCO headquarters for five days in Paris, France starting from July 9-13, 2012. On July 11, 2012, La Selle entered into the world history as it was named at the 24 meeting held by the Man and the Biosphere Programme, MAB, an international coordinating council of the UNESCO to have a biosphere. It is one of the twenty new site selected this year into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, WNBR. Together with the Sao Tome and Principle, the two countries are in the Caribbean region.

These biospheres are reserved areas by the UNESCO meant for serving the role of testing and experimentation of learning about sustainable development of natural resources. Its main area of concern is on the management and protection of areas such as the biodiversity of the fresh water, terrestrial, coastal and marine resources in the world.

Since its inception, the international coordinating council of the Man and the Biosphere has named about 598 reserved biospheres around the world. So far, there are 117 countries around the world that have been named as the reserved areas for the biosphere.
