Accident near Fond Parisien, 12 people have died

A cargo truck accident last Tuesday night near the town of Fond Parisien in Haiti took the lives of 12 people. Twenty four others were injured and taken to a hospital nearby for care.


According to Haiti's Civil Protection Office, the cargo truck was also carrying passengers. The truck came from the village of Thiotte in direction to the capital city of Port-au-Prince and was loaded with carrots.

The passengers were riding on top of the merchandise when the accident happened.

This is yet another fatal road accident in Haiti likely caused by an overloaded vehicle.

Some facts about Haiti road condition as well as safety tips:

Authorities' ability to respond to emergencies in the road is limited and in some areas nonexistent.

Signaling imminent actions is not widely practiced and not all drivers use turn indicators or international hand signals properly.

Drivers in Haiti roads do not always verify that the road is clear before switching lanes, turning, or merging.

Speed limits are seldom posted and are generally ignored.

Speeding is the cause of many fatal traffic accidents in Haiti.

Overloaded vehicles on winding, mountainous roads and vehicles without brakes are common in Haiti.

Poor maintenance and mechanical failures often cause accidents as well.

Drivers should be particularly cautious at night, as unlighted vehicles can appear without warning in Haiti roads

Right of way is not widely observed in Haiti, it is left to the driver more alert on the road.
