According to IMF, Haiti GDP Grew By 4 Percent in 2013

And the, if not good then, hopeful news keeps on coming. Information coming from the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics (IHSI) along with the Ministry of Economy and Finance shows there has been a registered increase of 6.4% of the index of industrial production. Baldly put, the Haitian gross domestic product has risen.

Detailed in the Q4 2012 to 2013 publication for July through to September, the results also showed a 2.5% increase of the quarter before. The increase is also backed by data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is slightly up from the forecast made earlier in June of 2013 which put the growth percentage at only 3.4%.

The growth can be attributed to spending done on ongoing reconstruction, an increase in the exports of textiles and efforts made in the field of agriculture. Also integral in the new turn of Haiti's economy was improvements in the manufacturing field. Wood manufacturing grew by 12.6%, food products, 6.5%, metallurgical works by 19.2% and chemical production by 9.4%.

Construction has also been up from the previous quarter's 6.9% to 15.7% and there has also been a slight decrease in the number of imports, from 2.6% to 2.1%, demonstrating the slow build to greater self-sufficiency Haiti has been experiencing with added investments in local industries and businesses.

The officials from the IMF who recently visited the country spoke with local authorities about a few of the risks inherent with these projections. They gave recommendations on how to mitigate these risks, including using deposits made in the banking system by the government for intervention when unforeseen events arise.
