Teaching Artist Maxine Montilus and the Ti Atis Program

Last year, the program had two sections, a collaborative mural project led by Jules Joseph, a visual artist, for 4th and 5th grade students, and a photo narrative workshop for students in the 6th and 7th grades, led by Richard Louissaint, photographer. This year, it is Ms. Montilus, a first-generation Haitian-American, who holds a B.F.A from the University of Arts in Modern Dance Performance and an M.A. from City University London in Arts Management who will take up the mantle. Montilus is slated to lead a 10-week arts residency called "Creative Expression through Movement".

As a choreographer and dancer, Montilus has a repertoire that includes work in Jamaica with the Jamaica Performing Arts Center as well as for the very first Rex Nettleford Arts Conference. She's also worked as a performer with Ase Dance Theatre Collective and the Balasole Dance Company. She's had work presented by Urban Bush Women as part of their community and culture series 'Being Bushified', and she was honored as an EMERGENYC artist in 2014 by the New York University's Hemispheric Institute for Performance and Politics.

The course will be held at The Bilingual Center at P.S. 189. It is a collaborative, after-school program put on between HCX and HAUP for middle-school students.
