MCI has been vigorous in regularly auditing the procedures at distribution sites that manufacture and sell food products. Pre-packaged foods are being inspected to insure manufacturers are being compliant with regulatory law. The facilities are also being inspected for adherence to hygiene standards.
MCI, for the last two years, in cooperation with DCQPC, has established consumer federation associations in all ten departments to more closely oversee compliance of goods and services within the area of consumer protection. These associations are raising the awareness and involvement of more citizens in the burgeoning consumer movement. It is hoped that these measures will give consumers the needed information with which to make educated choices, and become part of the economic strategy to move Haiti toward sustainable development.
The theme of World Consumer Rights Day, "The right of consumers to a healthy diet" attracts the attention of food manufacturers, street vendors, and restaurants, which will become conscious of the nutrient value in foods, and thus protect the rights of consumers.
