The five suspects have appeared before the Prosecutor of Port-au-Prince on Thursday with Geral Norgaisse as the acting Government Commissioner. After presenting a set of evidence, the prosecution made a decision to incarcerate the suspects. Instead of the National Penitentiary, the suspects were sent to the Civil Prison of Carrefour due to safety issues. Norgaisse refused to divulge too much information about the case because of its sensitivity. He said though that a judge will be assigned to take and oversee the case.
Moreover, National Police of Haiti spokesman Frantz Lerebours shared that three police officers have also been investigated over their likely involvement with Brandt, a businessman linked to a gang that have perpetrated a series of kidnappings in Port-au-Prince. Lerebours said that the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police was tasked to interrogate the police officers as part of precautionary measures.
Amid the case, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe said the government has "claimed victory over the issue of kidnapping" in the country. He added that the authorities will deal with anyone involved in the issue strictly and according to the law.
