Haiti last in tourist destinations, ranking 140 out of 140 countries in 2013

Tourism is one of the leading industries in many countries - in fact, all countries. However, some countries actually manage to capitalize on the natural, cultural and historical diversities they have while others fail dramatically. The classic example is Switzerland which topped the list of 'most favorite tourist destination in the world' for 5 consecutive years. According to the recent reports, the top five spots are all taken by European countries in Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index. Canada managed to jump up by one spot and took the eighth place. The country draws international tourists because of its cultural diversity and historical heritage and also because of its natural resources. However, the country did lose some grounds on policies for environmental protection and competitive pricing.

As opposed to the European countries, Canada and other leading countries, Haiti, despite being rich on both cultural and natural aspects, managed to fall behind every other country in this world and took the last position of 140. Why? Is Haiti short on natural beauty or is it deprived of History and Culture? The truth is that Haiti is rich in all aspects but being the poorest country in western hemisphere and decades of corruption and political instability left a hole so deep that Haiti's tourism industry failed to achieve what it is capable of. Lack of infrastructure like roads, communication etc. along with unparalleled corruption prevents international tourists from visiting this country that was once called Pearl of Antilles. Petionville, Plaine du Cul de Sac, Barbancourt Rum Distillery, itadelle Laferriere, Labadie Island, Amiga Island, Bay of Acul are some of the greatest treasures of the island country and they await the day when Haitian tourism will flourish and the country will regain its title.
