Hurricane Joakim on the way to Haiti

On September 27, 2015, Hurricane Joaquin gained strength to a category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean as it moved towards the Bahamas. It had remained there for a couple of days before curling back to the northeast and accelerated before passing the west of Bermuda. It dissipated on October 7th. The strengths of hurricanes are measured on a wind scale developed in the early 1970s by a Florida based consulting engineer Herbert Saffir and Dr. Robert Simpson, the then director of the National Hurricane Center. In the beginning, it was measured as per the hurricane's central pressure with respect to wind power. Today, the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale has been classified into 1 to 5 categories. Category 1: 74 to 95 mph; Category 2: 96 to 110 mph; Category 3 (major): 111 to 130 mph; Category 4 (major): 131 to 155 mph and Category 5 (major) 156 mph or more.
