Little Haiti Officially Recognized In Miami

On Thursday, May 26, 2016, after a long sixteen years' effort, the Miami-Dade Municipal Commission unanimously voted in favor of designating 'Lemon City' as 'Little Haiti'. 'Little Haiti' will have the boundaries roughly between 54th Street and 79th Street, and Northwest Sixth Avenue and Northeast Second Avenue. The announcement came before hundreds of Haitian-Americans who were present in Miami's city hall waiting anxiously to hear the outcome of their long fight and this victory was almost impossible without the effort of four former district commissioners. It was a sixteen year old argument over the idea of an official 'Little Haiti' -- and exactly, where its boundaries should be drawn.

Miami City Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon took a leading role to resolve the prolonged issue through an acceptance vote. The proposal was approved through a unanimous vote by the Miami commissioners. It is not only an acceptance and recognition of the contribution of the Haitian community in the city of Miami, it will help their battle against gentrification and prevent the encroachment of Haitian legacy. If this decision was not made, in a few years time, Little Haiti could have been disappeared from the map. Now no one can come and erase the name of Little Haiti. However, the new boundary is a compromise that recognizes the encroachment of the Design District.
People from different parts of the world come here to visit the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and the Caribbean Marketplace, because the names represent a cultural heritage which the Haitian community through a sheer determination has maintained and has turned a depressed neighborhood into vibrant, culturally rich area. It is a great respect for history. Little Haiti is one of Miami's most frequently visited cultural communities that is continuously enriching its multicultural diversity
