Lesly Saint-Roc François Manigat passed away at the age of 84

Born on August 16, 1930 in Port-au-Prince, Leslie François Manigat was Director of Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 1950s.

In 1963, Mr Manigat was imprisoned two months under the reign of Francois Duvalier. Upon his release, he went into exile in France, then the United States and Venezuela.

In 1970, Mr. Leslie François Manigat married Mirlande Hippolyte, a fellow expert in constitutional law.

Leslie François Manigat created the Rally of Progressive National Democrats (RDNP) in 1979

He became a candidate for President at the elections that took place Nov. 29, 1987.

In 1988, he became president after a Provisional Electoral Council said that he won the presidential election of January 17, 1988 that was undemocratic . Voter turnout was well under 10%. He was overthrown by Gen. Henri Namphy on June 20, 1988 in a Haitian coup d'état.

His wife, Mirlande Manigat, was a candidate in the presidential elections of 2010.
