While there is not too many things that Carrefour famous for, there is however one thing that puts this region on the map and in the news. It was the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit Haiti in January 2010. While this kind of an earthquake would not have made too much of an impact in some developed regions, over 40% of the buildings in Carrefour were destroyed. One of the buildings that had the heaviest impact was the city hospital.
While the whole scampered towards resurrection, they were assisted by the Cuban military. The Cuban military helped set up a mobile medical unit to provide medical assistance to affected people in the region. One of the very first things that was quickly restored after the attack was electricity, which was done in early February.
Carrefour is what is called a "bedroom community". People in this region would have to travel outside for earning their income though they dwell there. Carrefour recently celebrated its bicentennial year. The President, Michel Martelly, spoke highly of the community and highlighted how the region fought to get out of the effects of the earthquake.
