Digicel receives Award for Contribution to Education in Haiti

Telecommunications giant, Digicel, one of Haiti's mobile phone providers, won a Corporate Citizens of the Americas (CCA) award at a dinner in Washington D.C. The Trust for the Americas (The Trust), in partnership with the Organization of American States and the Inter-American Development Bank sponsors the CCA award. The honor was presented to Digicel CEO Sophia Stansky and Project Director, Rachel Pierre.

It was given to Digicel in the Vulnerable Communities division for its work in education. Digicel's foundation plans to construct 150 schools in the next year with 450-plus hours of teacher training, including mentoring and professional development, offered to 600 applicants.

Cellphone entrepreneur Denis O'Brien promoting Haiti entrepreneurship

Denis O'Brien, Irish billionaire and owner of cellphone company, Digicel was the first private investor to penetrate Haiti, the poorest country in Western Hemisphere. He introduced Digicel into Haiti in 2006. There was no shortage of skeptics about this move made by him but six years later in 2012, Digicel turned out to be the largest private sector investor in Haiti with a total user base of 4.8 million.

The cellphone entrepreneur is a true visionary and when everyone looks at the gloomy side of Haiti, he says that there is not even one Haitian problem that cannot be fixed. He says that all it takes is implementing the right project skills at the right place. He is right! He revolutionized the cellphone industry in Haiti by making cellphones available at rates as low as $7 per unit and call rates are fixed to be as low as it is practically possible.

How much money has been collected for National Fund for Education?

So far, it seems that we can not have an exact number. And why is that?

Remember that this is Haiti and we work under different standards. We are kind of unique in the way we see things

Listen to this, President Michel Martelly told the Haitian Diaspora community in Miami during a visit in Florida in December 2012 that the National Fund for Education, established in May 2011, had accumulated $16 million in US and not a penny of this money had been touched by the Haitian government.

The problem I have with this statement from our president is that there was an account given already and by someone that should know exactly how much money they have collected for the National Fund for Education.

Digicel Motives in Improving Haitian Lives

Irishman Denis O'Brien is billionaire entrepreneur who has succeeded in establishing mobile phone company, Digicel, on the island since 2006. His company is Haiti's biggest private investor.

Digicel's share of consumer users in Haiti is 4.8 million, nearly 50% of the island's population. This is a remarkable accomplishment in a country where the government of Haiti (GOH), and local development banks have been lax in courting private investment.

In December 2012, O'Brien held an awards event for small business owners, "Entrepreneur of the Year". President Martelly acknowledged O'Brien's enormous contributions.

Digicel generated revenue of around $2.5 billion during the 2011-2012 fiscal year, Haiti's contribution being $439 million. O'Brien sees the potential of small business owners in Haiti, having re-located Digicel's call center from monied Martinique to Haiti.
