Haiti Elections Likely In October 26, 2014 As Agreement Signed

Some representatives and groupings by more than 50 different political affiliations have signed the document. However, three political parties, including the Lavalas Family party of former president Jacques Stevenson Timoléon, the President of the Lower House has postponed his signature and said he will not sign a document, without knowing its content. We should note that, before making this statement to the press, he had guaranteed President Martelly, Cardinal Chibly Langlois and other politicians, he will sign the agreement.
President Martelly as a signatory to the agreement of the executive has expressed his satisfaction and congratulated the mediator Cardinal Chibly Langlois for letting the matter to a successful. He has also congratulated the parliamentarians involved in the complicated process of negotiation. Martelly described the accord as a victory for democracy and mentioned his sacrifice as he has accepted 45 of the 47 points proposed to the executive. It has been decided that the first round of the elections will be held on October 26, 2014.
Senator Benoit has also expressed his appreciation for the commitment of political leaders to solve the political impasse and said, this agreement is not perfect but it is a definite step towards change.
The agreement permits Parliament to amend, within the next ten working days, the current electoral law to allow the holding of a ballot to elect two-thirds of the 30-member Senate assembly. As per the existing legislation, renewal of only one-third of the 30-member Senate assembly is permitted.
The cost for the next election has been estimated at around $45 Million.
