Dr. Pradel Pompilus, respected Haitian scholar

Jerome Pierre Pradel Pompilus was one of the most respected scholars of Haiti. He was born in 1914 and died in 2000. He was born in a town called Arcahaie located in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Pradel was a writer, linguist, grammarian and teacher and defended both French and Haitian Creole within Francophonie. After he completed his high school education, Pradel Pompilus graduated in law from Law Degree in the year 1936. In the same year 1936 he became the professor of Latin and French in Alexandre Petion Port-au-Prince and Toussaint Louverture schools.


Dr. Pradel Pompilus earned a scholarship for studying in Paris after the WWII. He studied French Social Sciences from 1945 to 1947 at Sorbonne. Pradel soon obtained bachelor degree in classical literature and started teaching ancient Greek and Latin. Under Antoine Levelt, Paul Magloire and Franck Lavaud military junta, Pradel was elected Assistant Secretary of State for Education in Haiti in the year 1950. Ecole Normale Supérieure de Port-au-Prince was under the directorship of Pradel for eight years since 1950.

'Pages Haitian Literature' was the first book written by Pradel and it was published in the year 1955. Pradel went back to Paris in 1957 and prepared his French doctorate called 'The French in Haiti'. It was released in 1961 at Institute for Advanced Studies in Latin America, Paris. 'Glossary Creole-French, complementary thesis' was another book by Pradel that was published in 1958 by University of Paris. He preached the importance of Creole as national heritage of Haiti among the Haitians along with his linguist friend Pierre Vernet. In 1961, Creole was recognized as the 2nd official language of the Republic of Haiti. The event was marked by the presence of Pradel Pompilus.

Dr. Pradel Pompilus's contribution to education and defense of knowledge will always be acknowledge by Haiti and his death on 27 February 2000 is considered as heavy loss to the Haitian and International intellectual community.
