Many more people have been taken to hospital as a result of severe vomiting, fever and diarrhea which are the typical symptoms of feared cholera outbreak in Haiti.
Can we handle an outbreak of cholera in Haiti at this time?
I don't think we are in a position to handle anything, anytime. The country was just hit by a earthquake just few months ago. Haiti healthcare system is almost non-existent. The Haitian population can not get adequate food or water to drink. And now with this new health epidemic, how can they make the proper precautions to avoid being infected?
What is cholera and how dangerous is it?
According to Wikipedia.com: "Cholera is an infection of the small intestines caused by bacteria. The main symptoms are watery diarrhea, vomiting and abnormal pain. Cholera is transmitted primarily through contaminated drinking water or food. The severity of the diarrhea and vomiting can cause rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Primary treatment is with oral or intravenous rehydration. Cholera is a major cause of death in the world."
Cholera can easily be transmitted because the watery diarrhea is loaded with bacteria that can survive in water for a period of time. However you can prevent cholera infection by sterilization, anti-bacteria treatment of sewage or water purification
What can we do?
What should we do?
Do you have the answer? if so, let's hear it
