As per Homeland Secretary John Kelly's recent statement, such decision on the extension has been achieved after careful review of the current conditions in Haiti and conversations with the Haitian government. However, as per Paul Altidor, the Haitian ambassador to the United States, his government never asked for an 18 month extension... at least 18 months was a key part of the conversation.
Marjean Perhot, the director of Catholic Charities in Boston, who works with the Haitian immigrants in the U.S, believes seven years is not a very long time for a country like Haiti with poor infrastructure to receive back its compatriots. The country needs more time.
