Since Aristides's ouster at the end of his second term in 2004, he has lived in Africa until his return to Haiti in 2011. Although exiled for seven years, Aristide, who exerts enormous influence within and without Haiti, raised enough funding to start his foundation and build a medical school, the Aristide Foundation University (AFUNI).
AFUNI is a medical school, established in 2010, with 372 medical students enrolled for 2012-2013 school year. Last November 2012, AFUNI began a nursing curriculum, in response to Haiti's dearth of nurses, and has enrolled 73 freshman students for a four-year degree in nursing.
With the help of Haiti Relief Fund and U.S. suppport-aid, an overhaul of the school's infrastructure has been completed. President Aristide's next project is to attract potential in-residence teaching professionals, with Physicians for Haiti as a partner. AFUNI will provide comfortable housing for them.
