Mouvman Peyizan Papaya (MPP) asks farmers to sharpen machete

The Minister of Agriculture came out to declare himself highly concerned by the statements of one of the leaders of Mouvman Peyizan Papaya (MPP) that encouraged farmers to take action, affirming that it is time to use their machetes in order to attack government officials.

The controversy was minimized, as Thomas Jaques, declared that those statements went against republican values and the democratic ideals pursued by all civilized people. He called an incitement to hatred as obsolete in today's Haitian society. The result is still to be awaited. For this is not the first time that that Mouvman Peyizan Papay invites to direct action, the peasants of Haiti.

The Mouvman Peyizan Papay (MPP) is the largest movement of cooperatives that bring together farmers of Haiti's Central Plateau. Based in the small town of Papaye, the movement is affiliated with Via Campesina, the movement that internationally brings together peasants. They struggle to keep the Haitian peasant independent and able to keep providing real food for the community. Mouvman Peyizan Papay was the one to organize a very large demonstration in 2010, with the specific purpose to reject the "poisoned gift" from Monsanto. A new project started as a response to this issue: the Seeds for Haiti program.

The two forces are in a continuous battle, as the grassroots solidarity movement keeps developing strategies to mobilize a response to the government's agricultural policies presented this year. Officials keep their ground in asserting that, this is the way to start developing Haiti's agriculture and take it to the next stage.
