Amid the case, several students took to the streets and held a demonstration to demand justice for Damael D'Haiti. On Tuesday, they participated in an existing protest of teachers against low salary and taxes in Port-au-Prince. Reports said that barricades were put up at the scene, while people vandalized many vehicles. This led to violence between the police and protesters. The demonstrators reportedly threw stones at the police, who countered with tear gas. The police also fired rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.
This physical interaction between the police and the students did not sit well with the Ministry of Education. The ministry condemned the violence, as well as aired their concern over the students, parents and teachers affected by the incident. It also vowed to take legal measures to address the issue and hold people responsible for the violence.
