Lisa Sbrogna and Forward in Health bring Care to Haiti's Poorest

Lisa Sbrogna is one of thousands of volunteers working through small medical non-profits like Forward in Health (FIH) to serve the poorest suffering from untreated medical conditions. A Millbury, Connecticut resident, Sbrogna first came to the island in the wake of 2010's disastrous earthquake. She anticipated the trip would be stimulating and gratifying, but was unprepared for how the people would affect her personally.

She discovered Haiti's rural people are so impoverished simple medical conditions like an open cut, high blood pressure, or very treatable skin infections grow severe. This occurs because the poor in a town like Fonde Fred (population 9,000) lack health clinics.

When FIH, established by Dr. John Mulqueen and wife Paula, arrives in one of many villages they serve, along with physicians, nurses, and volunteers like Sbrogna, they provide medical care at the most primitive level. To dispense medications, FIH finds a piece of wood to set up their prescription inventory, and to see patients a church pew serves as an exam table. FIH sees as many as 700 patients a week, the majority of whom are children. Sbrogna says "You can literally see the bones of these poor kids"

She says she's found her calling in Haiti and will continue to return, funding her trip with a crowdsourcing campaign "Just in Jar" chocolate, spa, and soup kits for Christmas gift-giving. Next year she will be working out of a FIH Clinic private donations will fund.
