Haiti at New York City Marathon, J/P Haitian Relief Organization

Five of Haiti's most determined runners are gearing up to travel to the United States where they will take part in the New York City Marathon and make history just for their participation. The team will have their names remembered as being the first representatives for the country of Haiti in the New York City Marathon.

While the slow and steady style race is to be run on Sunday, November 3rd, the group of three men and two women will journey to New York early, set to arrive on October 29, to acclimatize themselves and, no doubt, also get acquainted with the city.

The venture is being put on by American thespian, Sean Penn's J/P Haitian Relief Organization, the same organization that is also partnering with American actress Pamela Anderson, who will also run for Haiti in the event.

The Haitian representatives include, from Cayes, 31 year old Bertine Lainé, 43 year old Astrel Clovis and 27 year old Jean Macksony. The remaining teammates are 31 year old Pétrus Césarion from Arcahaie and the youngest, 21 year old Carline Lamour from Petit-Goâve. They will run against some 45,000 other runners, all hailing from different countries, on a course of a distance of 42,195 km. The aim of the project is to help raise money for the rebuilding of Haiti as well as to give these local athletes a chance to compete internationally.

Along with the J/P Haitian Relief Organization, the Haitian Amateur Athletics Federation (FHAA) and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Civic Action (MJSAC) partnered up for the project.
