Sunscreen, Heatstroke and Hydration
Of course you know this! An SPF of 15 or higher will protect them from harmful sun rays and prevent painful sunburns. Pack enough for hourly reapplications as they tend to fade with sweat.
A core temperature over 104OF is what's called heatstroke. This silent killer can take out unsuspecting adults who don't play as hard as a normal child, so kids are especially susceptible. Never leave a child alone in a car, choose spots for play and exercise that are shaded and limit the most active exertions to times in the evening when it's not so hot.
Drink plenty of fluids. This shouldn't be limited to water alone. The sun and the day's exertions cause massive electrolyte and mineral loss through your sweat. Replenishing these can mean the difference between fun and not fun.
Gear
Always have light colored, non-cotton clothes that aren't bulky, sunglasses, hats and umbrellas, insect repellant, a first-aid kit, money and a cell phone.
Other best practices
• Parents--avoid alcohol and caffeine; they lead to dehydration.
• Even if it's hot, don't forget to warm up.
• Drink before, during (multiple times) and after play or exercise.
• Check playground equipment for safety. Look for sharp edges, splinters and rust.
• Always be present when children are swimming. Forbid running near the edge of a body of water and diving into unknown depths.
• In crowded places like amusement parks, have a designated spot for kids to meet you or teach them to look for help from police officers in uniform.
