Millions in Private Investment to make Haiti Tourist Magnet

The government of Haiti (GOH) wants to rebuild the island by developing its hospitality infrastructure to increase tourism. Haiti, at one time, had a thriving tourist industry, but the 2010 earthquake changed all that. Now GOH is banking on foreign investors to resuscitate Haiti's ailing tourist trade. It has signed contracts with private investors, giving them tax breaks over a 15-year period to develop resort projects. To sweeten the deal, GOH is also extending exemptions for import duties, so 11 hospitality projects can be given the go-ahead. The total sum of the proposed projects amounts to $160 million USD. Another $100 million in in-progress ventures is also on the books.

Sunrise Airways to Bring More Tourism to Haiti

Cap Haitien is about to get an uptick in tourism this summer. Sunrise Airways, a new airliner, has submitted an application to Turk and Caicos Islands (TCI) Air Transport Licensing Authority (ATLA) to ferry passengers between Providenciales and Cap Haitien International Airports (IA).

Sunrise Airways' application must be made public to permit competing air-passenger carriers to make objections. If objections are made, a hearing will be held to determine their validity. The outcome of the hearing will be the deciding factor to either approve or refuse the air carrier an operating license. If no one raises objections, the application will proceed through the review process and sign-offs more quickly. TCI ATLA Director, Tom Swann, has reported to the news media he is not aware of any objections to Sunrise Airways' planned service route.

New cruiseline "Quantum of the Seas" to go to Labadee

Royal Caribbean's brand new cruise line, Quantum of the Seas, is proving to be the true measure of all sea-faring vacation liners. Like the Titanic, a hundred and one years before it, this new cruise ship boasts the sort of amenities and capabilities only conjured up before in fevered, hallucinatory dreams. Not set to make its maiden voyage until 2014, Quantum will, no doubt, end the similarities with the doomed ocean-liner at the point of ambitious scope.

Set to be outfitted with all the regulars expected and depended upon in a Royal Caribbean (RC) cruise-liner, Quantum will also boast skydiving, simulated by the use of air pressure, bumper cars and a 300 feet bird's eye lookout called The North Star. RipCord (skydiving) will utilize strong winds to essentially float the brave up into the air. It's a feature that has been offered at various land-based parks, but this will be a first for the 'high' seas. The North Star, described by the execs of RC as an 'observation capsule' is said to be a sea-bound replica of the London Eye. It can hold at any one time 14 of the over 4,100 passengers on board and gives them an unprecedented view of the sites around them.

Bassin Zim Legend and Reality

Bassin Zim, little-known treasure of Haiti, sits along Central Plateau, eight kilometers away from Hinche. It contains waterfalls, coves, and caves. The falls tumble down in white-clouded streams to four azure coves below: Candelabra, Arc-en-ciel, Bassin Zim, and Wells. Implanted within each cove are colonies of caves lined with mineral rocks. Some contain artwork by indigenous Taino Indians before immigration and colonization began.

Considered a spiritual oasis for seekers of nirvana, it is rumored healing here manifests later in positive events in believers' lives. Those who can weather the daunting trek to Bassin Zim are rewarded by an almost unearthly scene of beauty.

The Last true treasure island in the Caribbean, Ile-a-Vache

An 8x2 mile island treasure chest, sitting prettily off the south-west peninsula of Haiti, might become an important part of the revitalization of the tourism industry in the country. Île à Vache, home to one of the largest mangrove forests in Haiti as well as anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 locals, is a veritable tourist boon with up to 20 deserted beaches just begging for a catchy slogan.

Indeed, the rebranding has already begun as the tourism leaders have described it as the 'last true treasure island' of the Caribbean; a truly evocative moniker that harkens back to a swashbuckling past sure to attract many. In its proposal, the Ministry of Tourism hopes to give the island a modernizing make-over that will highlight its natural beauty but also facilitate tourism that is self-sustaining. It includes plans for electric shuttles instead of cars, and a community farm to be run by locals.
