How to protect your property while you are away

Ensure that you discourage trespassing in your area. You can put up noticeable 'No Trespassing' signs. Having a guard on duty will also help a big deal. You can also set up Beware and/or the Fierce Dog signs.
Leave no evidence that you are not around. You can leave a cheap radio and some of the lights on. Keep changing items within your compound to indicate that some work is going on.
To keep callers unaware, you need to have a temporary phone installed at the house site. You will also have to set up call-forwarding service. Calls to your site have to be forwarded to your temporary residence.
At the temporary residential area, an answering machine should let the callers know that you can't answer their calls at the moment. It is necessary to ask for the callers details for future reference.
Sometimes you may find it ok to have a note on your door while you are away. There is no problem with that, only that the information should be minimal. Let the note communicate that you had to be away for a short time. Avoid informing readers your destination or the time you will be back.
If you will be away for a long time, let your trusted neighbours know where you will be and when you will be back. You can also give them your contacts.
Discourage any deliveries while you are away. Keep the police patrols near your home and keep records of cars that are frequenting near your home while you are away.
