Wyclef Jean to Perform "We Will Find a Way" at 2014 FIFA World Cup

Jean spent his early years in Haiti, but his family moved to New Jersey while he was still in grade school. He attended college fitfully, before he finally completed his education at Berklee College of Music.

By the late 1990s, he broke with the Fugees to start his solo career. He made music history playing alongside Shakira in her video, Hips Don't Lie, which was the biggest monster hit of the new millennium. He also composed the sound track for the documentary, The Agronomist.

Jean began his own foundation in 2001, Yele Haiti (YH). YH handed out scholarships to children after Hurricane Jeanne in 2004, and continued its philanthropic work following Haiti's 2010 earthquake.

In recent years, Jean's reputation has been damaged by revelations YE didn't file tax returns for four tax years running. Website, Smoking Gun, alleged YE was also engaged in improper bookkeeping practices.

In 2010, Jean tried to run for president in Haiti, but was rebuffed by the Provisional Electoral Council (PEC), for not meeting the five-year residency requirement in Haiti. Chastened by the rejection of his application, he asked his supporters to accept PEC's decision.
