Dominicans, not Haitians, expelled from their land to Haiti

Ricart - June 22 2015, 11:50 AM

The fact that thousands of Haitians nationals crossed the border into the Dominican Republic to seek work is public knowledge.

However, I will have to take issue with your assertion that illegal immigrants from Haiti are somehow entitled to stay in the Dominican Republic and make it their own. The Dominican Republic is a sovereign state, whose constitution stipulates that to be considered a Dominican citizen your parents have to be Dominicans or LEGAL RESIDENTS.

The immigrants in question were temporary workers that were granted temporary entry into the Dominican Republic for the duration of the cane cutting season.

Instead of returning to Haiti when their work was done, they broke Dominican Republic's immigration laws and violated its constitution by staying there illegally.

As a sovereign state, The Dominican Republic's government and militaries cannot allow foreigners to walk into their territory and make undeserved claims to citizenship.

You also claimed that the least the Dominican Republic could offer Haitian immigrants is a path to normalization and citizenship.

The Dominican government instituted a naturalization plan whereby Haitians could apply for Dominican citizenship.

However, Haitian authorizes made it impossible for its nationals to obtain Dominican citizenship by not providing required documentations.

You should know that the Dominican Republic do not grant automatic citizenship to the children of foreigners that are in transit (such as temporary workers that were allowed into the country for the duration of the cane cutting season).

Once again, the Dominican constitution stipulates that to be considered a Dominican citizen your parents must be Dominicans or LEGAL RESIDENTS.

You should also know that the under the Haitian constitution, the children born in the Dominican Republic to Haitian parents are in fact Haitian citizens, as stipulated in ARTICLE 11 of Haiti's constitution: "Any person born of a Haitian father or Haitian mother who are themselves native-born Haitians and have never renounced their nationality possesses Haitian nationality at the time of birth".

You claimed that the Dominican Republic has been striving on the back of Haitians, which is probably true considering that Haitian do jobs in the DR that nobody want and for low wages.

Nobody is forcing Haitians to do those types of jobs; they do it out of necessity.

Yes, Haitians consume most of the junks that the Dominican Republic produces, but nobody is pointing a gun to their head to force them into buying and consuming Dominican Products.

The alternative would be for Haiti to import their food from other nations, and pay hefty tariffs and custom duties for the privilege.

The products that the Dominican Republic exports to Haiti are essential for your survival and I find it ludicrous that you are using that as ammunition to attack the Dominican Republic.

Yes, Haitians do the most inhuman jobs in the Dominican Republic, but nobody is pointing a gun to their head to force them. The alternative would be for Haitians not to travel to the Dominican Republic to get those jobs.

Yes, Haitians businessmen take Haiti's hard earned money and invest in the Dominican Republic, but nobody is forcing them to do that. The Haitian businessmen are doing that on their own accord and for their benefits.

The alternative would be for those Haitian businessmen to take their business elsewhere.

Yes, Haitian students contribute to Dominican's wealth by paying for their children to go to school in DR, but nobody is forcing them to study in our schools and universities.

The alternative would be for Haitians to send their kids to study in USA, France, Canada, Germany, Australia, The United Kingdom, or Japan.

Better yet, Haitians could stay in their country and study at Université Roi Henri Christophe, the institution of higher learning whose construction was funded by the government of the Dominican Republic to the tune of US$30 millions.

Moreover, do not expect much solidarity from Dominicans and other Hispanics, by implying that Haitian businessmen travel to the Dominican Republic to flaunt their wealth and corrupt Dominican women.

The fact that affluent Haitians have to pay to get what poor Dominican men can get for free, does not bode well on the dignity of black Haitians.
