Does anyone who work in the US have to file an Income Tax return

Chavane Joseph - January 4 2016, 7:38 AM

Hi,

My question is that: does anyone who work in the US have to file an Income Tax return?.

My specific situation is that. I am a resident and going to College.

I did not make a lot of money while working in 2015. is it to my advantage to file an income tax return under my situation?

ANSWER:
Good morning Chavane,

Being a College student doesn't exclude you from filing an income tax return in the US.

There are a number of factors that affect whether you have to file, including:how much you earned, the source of that income, your filing status and your age. If your gross income is above the threshold for your age and filing status, you should file a federal income tax return.

This is, of course, assuming that no other person is claiming you on their federal income tax return.

You may also have to file for other reasons that will ultimately benefit you. For instance, filing a federal income tax return even when you don't meet the criteria above such as when you own special taxes like the alternative minimum tax (AMT) and other reasons
