Ecole Nationale Edèze Gousse and Lycée Célie Lamour in Jacmel access to handicap

The Government of Haiti in collaboration with USAID took part in the reopening up of some existing primary and secondary schools in Jacmel that were recently equipped with facilities for the handicapped. These schools, which are Ecole Nationale Edèze Gousse and Lycée Célie Lamour, have some items installed in them such as paved alleyways, adapted toilets, ramps and handrails.

The Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities in Haiti, Mr. Gerald Oriol, said that this rehabilitation of the schools opens up opportunities for the handicapped youth, and it is also a means of sensitizing the community on the importance of having such facilities and other public facilities accessible to the public as well as to the people with disabilities so that they are fully incorporated in the society.

The government's project with USAID intends to grant up to 6 schools the capacity to fully access these facilities. The project's funding is about $900,000. This is a way of encouraging the example of involvement and inclusion that communities in Haiti can follow.

On top of that, the project aims to increase Haiti's enrollment rate, which has gone up from 47% to 88% in 1993 and 2011 respectively according to the United Nation Development Program (UNDP).

The government aims to eradicate obstructions to accessing education especially for handicapped children who have had difficulty accessing education or those who have been denied public education because of factors such as stigmatization.

The aim is "To ensure that there are regular schools within the cities and provincial towns that are accessible to persons with disabilities so that they have the opportunity to attend school with the least possible challenges and are able to participate actively in the classroom and courtyard and be as autonomous as possible."

The groups are considering making upgrades of infrastructure at some schools in Port-au-Prince.
