Hague Convention Demands Compliance with International Adoption Policies

Evangelicals have been urging foreign adoption of Haitian children, following 2010's earthquake, which left hundreds of children voluntarily surrendered by their parents.

Christian-affiliated Orphan Sunday, held for the fifth year, has been created to raise awareness of children, who need loving, stable homes. The event is also a learning opportunity to let foreign adopters know they must adhere to adoption laws, to reduce international child trafficking.

Countries, such as Russia, have tightened their adoption laws, to make it more difficult for foreigners to adopt children. The change in adoption laws is a response to obsessive Christian do-gooders, who have been getting children adopted in defiance of adoption laws.

One incident grabbed attention-getting headlines within days of Haiti's earthquake. Ten members of New Life Children's Refuge (NLCR) tried to spirit Haitian orphans into the Dominican Republic (DR) sans adoption documents. When they couldn't offer proof at the DR border parents had given them up, or Haitian adoption officials had released the children into their care, they were arrested and thrown in jail. NLCR Director, Laura Silsby, insisted the plan was to travel with the children to a NLCR orphanage in the DR.

Refusal to follow adoption procedures in adoptees countries has increased the risk of ". . . unethical, improper, or illegal . . ." adoptions, and greater risk of child trafficking. The Hague Convention on Adoption wants global policies for inter-country adoptions. Not only should each country create tough adoption restrictions, but demand compliance with them.
