Panic attacks are a biological and hormonal event.

But what brings on these terrifying occurrences called Panic attack?

Researchers suggest that heredity may play a role, according to interviews of study subjects. Some responders indicate a member of his or her family suffers from panic attacks also, or other anxiety-related disorders.

Researchers speculate an abnormal biological function may contribute to panic attacks, but have not yet discovered a determining genetic marker. Pertaining to ethnic backgrounds, panic attacks can occur in all races, without exception. But gender statistics conclude women are 50% more prone to panic attacks than men. Panic attacks can occur at any age, but usually target young adults.

Major life changes induce stress and can set off a panic attack. One correlation researchers have observed is the connection between life events of loss, abandonment, or separation, and a subsequent panic attack.

Major life stressors, researchers theorize, work to lower psychological defenses until abnormal functioning of the sympathetic nervous system throws a switch, bringing on an attack. Then too, a sufferer may anticipate a panic attack, and their anxiety, coupled with sensitivity to a stimulant, can bring on an attack. Or the reverse is possible in that some medications can induce a panic attack.

With so many varying factors of mind, body, or both combined, identifying causes of a panic attack are difficult and frustrating. A correct therapy treatment plan takes a comprehensive approach, exploring all biological, physiological, and psychological causes of panic attacks.
