Jocelerme Privert Elected As Provisional President

On February 14, 2016, the Haitian Parliament elected former Senate Chief Jocelerme Privert (62) as the new interim president, one week after the previous president Martelly stepped down with no successor. Mr. Privert was a cabinet minister under President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Hours later, while addressing the nation from the National Palace as the 51st President, he has called for unity and sacrifice to help the country out of the political crisis that brought him into the power. Privert will hold his office for 120 days and remain responsible to organize the overdue presidential election on April 24, 2016 and install a new President on May 14, 2016. However, holding the overdue election would be his main challenge because most of the opposition political parties are demanding complete cancellation of the October 25, 2015 election. They are not even happy with his selection. He has to find out a consensus prime minister and government who will need to help him constitute a credible nine-member electoral council.

During his speech for the occasion, he has thus, reminded that the people of the country should welcome his installation as the interim president; it is a new step in resolving the crisis in a peaceful and inclusive way. His selection was the result of a last-minute accord signed by him as head of the Senate, former President Michel Martelly and by Cholzer Chancy, the President of the Lower Chamber of Deputies and his win came after 12 hours of debate, discussions and improvisation in the parliament. This was the first time that Haitian Parliament voted to elect president since electing Dumarsais Estimé on 16 August 1946.
