Kerry has a particular interest in Haiti, having worked with the Haitian Diaspora in his home state of Massachusetts. He considers the Diaspora an outstanding and dedicated community, who has risen to high positions in government, besides sending remittances to Haitians back home, accounting for millions of dollars supporting Haiti's economy.
Kerry spoke about his enthusiasm in presenting bipartisan legislation in Congress, to aid in recovery efforts, after the 2010 earthquake toppled the country's infrastructure. He added he acted as a liaison between adoption agencies and Massachusetts families to hasten adoption proceedings of Haitian orphans in progress, before the earthquake struck.
Kerry is not forgetting his commitment to Haiti's development ". . . in a way that creates an opportunity to emerge better off and better prepared" as a positive outcome of its economic setback, with help from the U.S.
Kerry extended President Obama's personal message to the Haitian people ". . . in commemorating the courage and spirit of independence of all Haitians . . . and the ties of friendship and family that bind our peoples together."
