Clifford Brandt, businessman and entrepreneur, is being brought to justice as the lead defendant of accomplices involved in an abduction network. The network has been targeting victims of kidnapping for many years.

The Central Directorate of the Judicial Police arrested him back in October 2012, after he abducted two youths. The kidnapping laid bare a network of abductors participating in abductions going back several years. Brandt, along with 12 of his co-conspirators will be tried in a criminal court proceeding before a judge.

Judge Me Gabrielle Dominique filed an ordinance specifying charges against 19 defendants including Brandt. Brandt is being indicted on charges of kidnapping, sequestration of people against ransom, criminal conspiracy, false death threats, possession of illegal firearms, and money laundering.

The international community (IC), especially the U.S., has growing concerns about Haiti's leniency when it comes to clamping down on international drug trafficking. The country is a port-of-call for cocaine entering its southern border from South America, and marijuana from Jamaica.

A 2013 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, issued not long ago, characterizes the pace of enforcement efforts as maddeningly slow. Too few check points and spotty air surveillance on Haiti's northern and southern shores is the primary cause. The laxity of enforcement permits shipments of drugs into the country from the southern end, and their movement out of the country in the north.

Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's presidency has been surrounded in the deaths of thousands Haitians, several of them well-known political figures and activists. Famous assassinations in the country during the 1990s can be classified into two: Aristide's supporters or the former president's critics.

Antoine Izméry was well-known businessman and a strong supporter of Aristide as a pro-democracy activist. He belonged to one of the wealthiest families in Haiti and was a large financier of the former president's campaign in 1990. When Aristide was ousted and exiled by a successful coup d'état in 1991, Izméry remained loyal and formed the Komite Mete men pou Verite Blayi (KOMEVEB), an organization that was aimed at exposing and publicizing the events that transpired during the coup and at bringing back Haiti's democratic form of government under Aristide. Along with this cause came the assassination of his brother, Georges, by the new military regime in power.

Haiti under former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, despite being under a democratic form of government for the first time, was shrouded in chaos and violence. Aristide's term in office before being successfully ousted via a coup d'état in 2004 was met by most Haitian citizens with criticism and protest because of his supposed poor leadership and corruption, as well as his inclination to violence. The former president and Catholic priest's government has also been associated with several extrajudicial killings which elevated further the anger and disappointment of thousands and thousands of Haitians. The 1990s was a long rough patch for Haiti and Guy Malary was one of the victims of that period in Haiti

The country was overwhelmed with chaos and violence due to political turmoil between the Haitian government under former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, during his first term in office, and several military leaders and groups. Thousands of individuals who advocated for change and for democracy lost their lives during this dark phase in Haitian politics. One of these noble men and women is Guy Malary.

Guy Malary was the former Justice Minister of Haiti, put into office by Aristide in 1991 and served until his untimely death in 1993. His term was Justice Minister was set in a country torn by violence and the thirst for control and power. He was given the very dangerous task of formulating and presenting laws and policies to the Haitian parliament's legislation that will divide the country's police from the military, a highly-sensitive issue during this time as the parliament was strongly divided with opposite opinions and stands regarding this suggested separation. Malary also sought for the implementation of the Governor's Island Accord and a positive change in Haiti's judicial system.

Aside from the death of Minister of Justice Guy Malary, former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's first term in office during the 1990s was shadowed in the assassination of another heroic Haitian personality advocating for change and better governance. This adds to the long list of the Aristide and his supporters' involvement in various extrajudicial killings.

Mireille Durocher Bertin was a popular Haitian lawyer in the 1990s for her human rights advocacies and her active protest against the reinstatement of Aristide as Haiti's President, as pushed by former U.S. President Bill Clinton and the U.S. government. She was a well-known outspoken critic of the former president and his government, being a member of the right wing of the then divided Haitian society.

Haiti National Police has conducted its biggest operation for a long time. On Sunday night, January 13, 203, with the help of MINUSTAH and other security forces like UNPOL, the Haitian National Police hit several hot spots around the neighborhood of Bel-Air and proceed in the arrest of several undesirable members of the society.

According to an official of the PNH, among the people arrested over the weekend, the list includes Kidnappers, Ex-convicted, and people who have been involved in various criminal activities in the Haitian Capital

The operation headed by Haiti National Police in the neighborhood of Bel-Air resulted in over 200 criminals actually in the hands of Haitian authorities.

The Insecurity in Haiti does not discriminate. A cousin of President Michel, Lesly Martelly, has become the latest victim of insecurity in Haiti as he was shot by a gunmen during an attempted robbery in Delmas 2, Port-au-Prince.

The shooting incident took place Tuesday, December 18, 2012

According to Radio Kiskeya, the bandits opened fire on Lesly Martelly to rob his car. Martelly was taken to the hospital immediately where he had to undergo surgery. The victim is not in dangeras reported by government officials.
