Michigan Matthew Andrew Carter, sentenced to 165 years for sexually abusing children in Haiti

The trial was presided over by Judge Joan Lenard, who had no qualms about sentencing Carter to the fullest extent the law would allow, giving him 15 years in prison for the one count of child sex tourism and 30 years in prison for every count of traveling from Florida to sexually abuse a minor. The children were residents of the group home. Taken in by Carter, who was a military vet and started in missionary work through that medium, the former Morning Star residents gave testimony to his abuse over the course of the three-week trial.

Having testified that the abuse took place when they were children, the victims were not hurt by the lack of DNA or physical evidence, a fact which Carter's defense tried to use to their advantage. Still, despite the lack of photographs or video evidence, the jury and presiding judge found Carter guilty as charged for the assaults which spanned the 16 years the Morning Star Center was open.
