Creation of industrial free zones, Tabarre, Varreux in Cite Soleil
The projected Tabarre free zone will take up an estimated 3 carreaux of land and will house two buildings of over 10,000 square meters each. These modernly constructed industrial buildings were made with promoting Haiti in mind. The facilities are described as 'attractive and should entice overseas investors. They are slated to have circulation areas that allow ease in transport of the 56 40ft containers they are slated to boast.
Also in the mix is the addendum to the original agreement to also create an industrial free zone in Cité Soleil, a Varreux town. The West Indies Industrial Mill, who operates projects in both Cité Soleil and Tabarre, have partnered with the government of Haiti to make this possible. The addendum will see the increase of land assets from 19.6 to 24.69 carreaux. It forebodes an increase of the Mill's initial investment of nearly 50%, from $45.4 million to $87.4 million USD. This project is slated to create a further 21,000 direct jobs and approximately 100,000 indirect ones within Haiti.
Industry and Commerce Minister, Laleau, made the pleasure of the Haitian government known to the participating entities. He commended them on their agreement which will see the creation of thousands of necessary jobs to boost Haiti's struggling economy.
