PM Evans Paul marginalized at Jocelerme Privert' investiture

Just like most Haitians, yesterday (February 14, 2016) I was watching the ceremony of investiture of Jocelerme Privert as the Provisional President of Haiti. Like many I suppose, I was very surprised to see some of the hard core oppositions present at the ceremony such as Maryse Narcissi and Mildred Aristide. But to me it was even more surprising to see Prime Minister being marginalized as he was standing in the crowd just like everyone else listening to the President. Some people said that it was nothing because all the dignitaries were there including all the ministers.

Agreement between Michel Martelly, Jocelerme Privert, Cholzer Chancy

On February 6, 2016, at the National Palace, President Martelly has officially signed an agreement with President Jocelerme Privert and Vice-President Cholzer Chancy of the National Assembly to leave office as per his plan designating a Government of transition to solve a possible vacuum of power in Haiti. The Organisation of American States has helped to broker the deal among deeply divided politicians in the Caribbean nation.

However, as per G8, this agreement attempts to validate the 2015 election disregarding the general consensus and protests of the common people. It seeks to postpone a crisis that must be solved rather. Furthermore, the presidents of the two chambers cannot be engaged to decide without a prior majority vote. The agreement has been made at a time when the former soldiers have been deployed by the administration to block the democratic impulses of the Haitian people.

Jocelerme Privert likely to head the Transitional government?

In just two days, many will no longer have Michel Martelly to kick anymore. However, a new name will come out within the next two days. It will be a provisional government headed by someone. Who will it be? I just have one simple question. How many people think that the transitional government will be headed by none other than the Senator of the Nippes Department, Jocelerme Privert?

What do you think?

Haitian Kreyol:

Charles Castel, BRH, deficit well below one percent of GDP

Four months into the fiscal year, figures from the government of Haiti's (GOH) Budget Office suggest the Haitian economy is suffering an extreme lack of growth. A revenue deficit between 9 to 14 billion gourdes has been calculated from figures submitted by the Directorate General of Taxation and General Administration of Customs.

Senator Jocelerme Privert, who heads the Economy, Finance, and Budget Commission, revealed her fears the economy is not growing according to estimates given at the first of the year. In fact, according to her, revenues have fallen far short of projections.

Bank of the Republic of Haiti, Governor Charles Castel, representing the government of Haiti (GOH), responded to Privert at an arranged news conference. He said she was relying on incomplete information; the revenue deficit is not as bad as she thinks it is. He said her figures don't take into account the GOH's expenditures, when subtracted from revenues, comes to only a 2.6 billion-gourde public deficit. The public deficit is the difference between revenues and expenditures, and is the correct figure by which to determine the deficit.
