Barbancourt is a popular rum produced in Haiti, considered one of the premier rums manufactured on the globe. French cognac maker, Dupré Barbancourt, came to Haiti and began rum production in 1862. Four generations of Barbancourts have run the family empire, beginning with Nathalie Gardère, Barbancourt's widow. She managed the operation along with Paul Gardère, her nephew, until her death. He took over production until he passed away in 1946. Surviving son, Jean Gardère, headed the operation until he passed in 1990. His son, Thierry Gardère, has been leading the company ever since.

By 1949, the Barbancourt Company had moved operations to the sugar cane plantation, Domaine Barbancourt, in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac area. In the early 1950s, the profitable operation increased production, making the company a prominent manufacturer of premium rums.

It is with great sadness that news of three dead young boys reached the citizens of Haiti last week on Wednesday. The bodies were found in the wee hours of the morning having been killed and with their hands tied behind their backs and burned with vehicle tires. The three young boys were said to be a mob of thieves that had been terrorizing the cities and towns near La Plaine, Port-au-Prince and had given the residents a vey hard time for a while. It is therefore believed that the residents lynched the boys with the idea of trying to teach the residents a lesson.

In recent months, outbreaks of senseless violence have occurred in Port-au-Prince and Les Cayes. Angry crowds of people have beaten to death young people they suspected of thievery, for something as minor as the theft of a mobile phone.

Saturday last, Port-au-Prince police reported cremated remains of two suspects and hanging of a third, by hostile bands of citizens. In La Plaine, police discovered incinerated bodies of two victims hog-tied, and a third also burned and hog-tied, found on Route National 2, near Port-au-Prince. In another violent incident in Santo, three young suspects accused of stealing motorcycles--in which one suspect escaped--were stoned and beaten with tire irons and set on fire.
