Mario Dupuy at Lakou Soukri during Guede Festival

The Haitian Minister of Culture, Jean Mario Dupuy celebrated the Lakou Soukri kings on the occasion of Guedes, the traditional festival in Haiti. This is just two months after returning to Gonaives from his visit to Lakous.

Mario Dupuy Marks His Presence

Shella Tanisma, the Empress and Marie Carme Delve, the servant, welcomed the Minister as per the rituals. Mario Dupuy stated that his presence amongst the people was a testimony to his commitment to the Republic's President, Michel Martelly, the government and Laurent Lamothe, the Prime Minister and that it demonstrates how important voodoo religion was in Haiti.

He stated that it is the State's duty to accompany them and recalled that the custodians of culture in Haiti are mainly the Lakous. In case any of Lakous inhabitants faced any injustice on a social level, then the government will be more than willing to repair this, he emphasized.

Rehabilitation Work In Lakou Souvenance

He cited the rehabilitation work that had begun in Souvenance of Lakou as a proof of their commitment. He also made a mention about the arrival of representatives of the ONI and the Ministry of Justice and National Archives and installation of sanitary facilities. He emphasized that these things were done so that Lakous inhabitants would get identity documents that were authentic.

He also stated that the government was more than willing to spend money as required to build religious houses to ensure that the Lakous do not face any kind of injustice. To elevate cultural significance, efforts will be put in by the government to rebuild houses and roads in the villages, plant trees and improve the functioning of rivers thus providing a better standard of living for the people.

Developing Lakou Souvenance To Generate Revenue

One of the popular sites in Haiti for pilgrims is Ti Joe Lakou Souvenance which attracts foreigners and locals in large numbers.

He mentioned that the meetings organized annually at Lakou Souvenance, will attract tourists thereby help the country to generate additional revenue.
