Cheryl Little Stands for Children in Miami-Dade

Little has worked persistently on behalf of the rights of immigrant families for almost 30 years. In recognition of her contributions, she received the David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award. This award, given out every year, is named for David Lawrence Jr., nationally recognized as a pre-school education advocate and the ex-publisher of the Miami Herald.

Cheryl Little said it was gratifying to be the recipient of such a prestigious award named after Dave Lawrence. She added he is not only an advocate for children ". . . but every good cause you could think of." Lawrence said there was no one more deserving than Little.

Cheryl Little, who is the Executive Director and co-founder of Americans for Immigrant Justice, started her social advocacy in 1985. She took a position with the Haitian Refugee Center and published a report, Haitian Children Awaiting Visas: A Plea for Help. As a result, almost 200 children were reunited with family members. She saved many immigrant teens from deportation, among them Shamir Ali, who calls her his guardian angel.

Marleine Bastien, Executive Director of FANM, an after-school program, said 'Little has sowed love around the entire community'. Because of her generosity, the community has benefited greatly.
