Born in Miami, Victoria Duval lived for years as a child in Haiti, and trained in Port-au-Prince at the JOTAC Tennis Academy. At eight she returned to the States and resumed training at Atlanta's RCS Tennis Academy. With her trainer, Nick Bollettieri, Duval took her right-handed, two-handed backhand technique to her career highs of no. 717 for doubles, achieved in October of 2012, and a ranking of no. 285 for singles in May of 2013.
Described as an upset, Duval's victory over a player with a world ranking of 11 was not an easy one. Both ladies played a vigorous match, but Duval hit her second wind in the middle of her third set, coming up from behind at 3-2. Apparently no stranger to hardship, after her father was injured in the 2010 Haitian earthquake, Victoria Duval took losing two of her first three games in the third set in stride and was able to turn her luck around in the 10th game.
