Once you and your partner are contemplating marriage, you'll need to purchase both engagement and wedding rings. Rings are high on the list of expenses you'll incur as you plan your wedding. And you want the rings to be a reminder of your commitment to one another. So choose thoughtfully.

If you're on a limited budget, there are a couple of options to help save money. Pawnshop jewelry that has been taken out of hock is a good place to look, where you can find some rare jewels of beauty among the stock. Or you could go the Ebay route, bidding online for your rings.

When you place an announcement of your engagement in your hometown paper, you may want to include a photo of yourselves, either together or separately. Besides the announcement in the paper, send family and friends note cards announcing the engagement. If you should receive any engagement gifts from them, reply with a thank you note.

Your extended family may want to throw you an engagement party, but understand guests do not need to bring gifts. Know that all attendees at the engagement party must be guests at the wedding as well.

If you and your intended decide not to follow through with the marriage and break the engagement, the matter of keeping the ring or not depends on what state you reside in. Jurisdictions have different requirements. Some mandate the engagement ring not be returned and others that the ring goes back to its purchaser.
